Superannuation
We contribute up to 12.75% of your salary into superannuation.
QSuper is the Queensland Government's default superannuation fund. You can choose a different one.
Salary packaging
Salary packaging, or salary sacrifice, is when you and your employer ‘package’ your salary into income and benefits.
How it works
Salary packaging is when you arrange to receive less income after tax, in return for your employer paying for benefits out of your pre-tax salary. The benefits could be things like a car or a phone.
You may be able to sacrifice:
- extra superannuation contributions
- insurance
- mortgage repayments
- novated car leases
- private school fees
- rent
- utility costs such as electricity and gas.
You can do salary sacrificing if your role is:
- permanent – full-time or part-time
- temporary – full-time or part-time
- long-term casual – employed on a regular basis for 12 months or more.
For information about salary packaging arrangements, Queensland Health uses the salary packing providers, RemServ and SmartSalary.
Fringe benefits
A fringe benefit is something extra you get from your employer. It is in addition to your salary. It's a 'payment' but in a different form to salary or wages. It may also be in return for some of your salary under a salary sacrifice arrangement.
If you’re eligible for the fringe benefit tax (FBT) exemption cap, you can do salary packaging with various benefits.
You may also be eligible for non-salary sacrifice fringe benefits, such as:
- a living-away-from-home allowance
- accommodation support
- private use of a work vehicle
- relocation, transfer and appointment expenses
- communication packages.
The FBT exemption cap is not an employee entitlement. It’s a tax concession for some categories of employers under the FBT legislation.
You should seek independent financial advice prior to commencing salary packaging arrangements.
